I. Course Description
The Summer Clerkship is a one month (160 hours) clinical rotation in an institutionally approved clinical setting. It is designed to reinforce skills acquired during the first year coursework in clinical skills and ophthalmic materials management. The student is expected to practice, under the instruction and guidance of the preceptor, according to the highest standards of clinical, moral, and ethical conduct.
II. Educational Objectives
There are three sets of educational objectives for the clerkship. The student is expected to meet all of the objectives by the completion of the clerkship.
- Ophthalmic Materials Management Objectives
- The student will be able to guide a patient to the appropriate frame selection, taking account ophthalmic, occupational, and avocational considerations, as well as comfort and fashion.
- The student will be able to determine and recommend the most appropriate lens design into account, occupational, and avocational considerations, as well as comfort and fashion.
- The student will understand and be capable of providing patient education on the ophthalmic characteristics and benefits of lens materials and features, including: antireflective coating; scratch resistant coating; aspheric lenses; high index lenses; transitions lenses; polarized lenses; and progressive lenses
- The student will be able to accurately measure an interpupillary distance (PD) on all patients and segment height for all multifocal types.
- The student will be able to accurately fill out an order form for spectacles which stipulates all information that completely defines frame and lens features.
- The student will be able to accurately verify the parameters of spectacles, utilizing both manual and automatic lensometers.
- The student will be able to properly place all frame styles in standard adjustment.
- The student will be capable of providing minor spectacle adjustments and repairs, utilizing the correct ophthalmic tools to adjust and/or repair temples, nosepads, eyewires, etc.
- The student will be able to educate the patient on how their spectacles are to be utilized, paying particular attention to adaptation issues and proper lens care.
- The student will be able to methodically address patient eyewear complaints by considering issues such as refractive changes, frame adjustments, pantoscopic tilt, base curve, horizontal or vertical prism, and segment height.
- The student will be capable of utilizing frame and vendor catalogs to determine frame price and the availability of styles, colors and sizes.
