Doctors Vision Center Now Offering Advanced CustomVue LASIK in Greenville, Raleigh and Wilmington

March 26th, 2008

Vision Correction Treatment is more Accurate and Increases Patient Eligibility

Until now, vision problems such as certain types of nearsightedness, night vision and astigmatism presented challenges for patients interested in receiving LASIK. In order to address these issues, Doctors Vision Center is pleased to provide patients in Greenville, Raleigh and Wilmington with the option of Advanced CustomVue LASIK treatment. The treatment is 25 times more accurate than the standard model used for glasses, lenses and traditional LASIK.

“Advanced CustomVue provides improved accuracy and safety that is vital for successfully treating a wide range of vision problems,” says Dr. Charles Titone of Doctors Vision Center in Greenville. “In doing so, the treatment also significantly improves the likelihood of achieving 20/20 vision thereby reducing the patient’s dependence on glasses and contacts that many continue to use to remedy what traditional laser treatments cannot improve.”

Advanced CustomVue LASIK’s improved accuracy begins with the creation of a detailed map of each eye’s imperfections, which is translated into treatment instructions for reshaping each eye’s cornea. A patient’s pupil normally shifts positions between the time the eye is measured and the time of the procedure. Advanced CustomVue’s mapping technology is combined with a stabilizing feature that precisely aligns the patient’s pupil with the laser, regardless of shifting, to deliver a safer procedure for more intricate surgeries.

CustomVue LASIK offers the broadest FDA-approved treatment for vision correction. In fact, the improved treatment has increased patient eligibility to 94 percent of the population with treatable vision problems, including: nearsightedness, high nearsightedness, farsightedness and all types of astigmatism.

“Advanced CustomVue is really like purchasing a custom-made, tailored suit rather than a suit off the rack,” says Dr. Titone. “You can rest assured that it is going to fit you correctly in all the right places.”

Understanding PRK

March 3rd, 2008

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a refractive procedure in which the surface of the cornea is reshaped using the excimer laser. However, unlike LASIK, there is no corneal flap created prior to the use of the excimer. Instead, the laser treatment is applied directly to the surface of the cornea. Hence, the reference to PRK as “surface ablation”.

PRK may be a better choice than LASIK for patients who have thin corneas or who cannot, or do not wish to, have a corneal flap created. For example, members of certain branches of the military, some law enforcement professionals and other occupations will not permit their members to have corneal flaps created due to concerns over the potential for the flap to become dislodged under certain circumstances.

Since the protective superficial layers of the cornea are actually receiving the laser treatment, patients who undergo PRK will be more uncomfortable following surgery than those who have LASIK, and may require significantly more time than LASIK patients to achieve their best post- operative vision.

PRK results are very similar to LASIK results. Studies at the 6 month post-operative visit show that vision at that point in time are essentially equivalent in myopic (nearsighted) patients whose original degree of error was less than or equal to
–6.00.

PRK can be used to treat myopia, hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
